Symptoms of asthma
Asthma is a chronic lung disease characterized by episodes of airflow obstruction. Symptoms of an asthma attack include:
Cough
Wheezing
Short of breath
Chest tightness
Acute symptoms require rapid measures to help patients resume their activities as soon as possible. It is also necessary to act quickly to prevent episodes of increasingly serious or even life-threatening.
In case of children suffering from asthma, all the staff, substitutes, volunteers and collaborators of the school know what to do in case of an attack.
Acute symptoms that require rapid action are:
Cough or wheezing
Difficulty breathing
Chest tightness
The symptoms of exercise-induced asthma (coughing, wheezing, chest pain or pressure) can last several minutes or more than an hour. These symptoms are quite different from dyspnea (deep and rapid breathing) that quickly returns to normal after aerobic exercises.
Children may have symptoms that do not indicate an acute episode but may need immediate treatment if they indicate that their asthma is not under proper control.
Signs that may indicate poor asthma control are:
A persistent cough
Coughing, wheezing, tightness in the chest, or difficulty breathing after vigorous physical activity, recurrently
Low level of resistance during physical activity or reluctance to participate
