 What is Asthma?

 Asthma; is a chronic inflammatory disease of the airways. In sensitive people; with breathlessness, wheezing, coughing, and tightness in the chest. Complaints may resolve spontaneously, become increasingly violent or disappear with medications. Genetic and environmental factors play a role in the formation of this inflammation. The most important genetic risk factor is allergies (atopy).

What is the frequency of sightings?

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) data, Asthma, which affects about 300 million people worldwide, affects children the most. Asthma, which has become a major health problem in modern life; is an important public health issue for both developed and developing countries. Surveys in our country have revealed that about 5 percent of the population is asthmatic.

How is asthma diagnosed?

The foundation of asthma diagnosis is based on the story of the patient. Patients typically have complaints; with a feeling of wheezing, shortness of breath, coughing, and tightness in the chest, especially in the nights. They may complain of coughing after flu or upper respiratory infections for more than three weeks or if they have a chest infection with flu-like infections. Sometimes the disease can only go on stubbornly coughing. The characteristic of asthma symptoms is repetitive. Some factors may provoke the disease. For example, irritant gases (sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide), allergens, exercise, viruses, infections, medications, and stress may exemplify the underlying causes of the disease. Patient respiratory function test and PEF meter measurements are performed during diagnosis and evaluation. Simple exercise test can be applied especially in children. In some cases, the 'nonspecific bronchial provocation' test may be performed.

What are the risk factors?

· Atopy: hereditary and structural features leading to the development of the allergic disorder of the person

Smoking: The greatest trigger of asthma is the risk factor.

· Allergens

· Respiratory tract infections

· Occupational stimuli and air pollution: Patients exposed to external factors such as continuous smoke and chemical particles may be expected to develop the disease.

What precautions should you take to prevent asthma in your baby if you know that you are an asthmatic person?

· Do not smoke during pregnancy.

· Keep your baby and your home away from cigarette smoke after childbirth.

· Cover your baby's bed with a special powder.

· Do not house cats and other hairy animals at home.
