A dosed aerosol inhaler (sometimes referred to simply as a dosed aerosol or dosed spray) is a device that releases a specific amount of medication to the lungs, a short drug spray cloud in the form of an aerosol, which is self-administered by the patient thanks to an inhalation. It is probably the most commonly used release system to treat bronchial asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and other respiratory diseases. The medicament contained in an aerosol dispensed inhaler is generally a bronchodilator or a corticosteroid or a pre-set combination of both for the treatment of asthma and bpco. Other drugs used less frequently through a dosed aerosol inhaler include some mast cell stabilizing molecules (mast cells) such as sodium cromoglycate or nedocromil.

A pre-dosed inhaler consists of three main components. The container which is produced in aluminum or stainless steel by a drawing process, and which is responsible for containing the formulation to be inhaled; the metering valve, which allows the delivery of a precise dosage amount of formulation to each drive; finally a mouthpiece that allows the patient to operate the device and directs the aerosol to the lungs. The formulation consists of the drug, a liquefied gas propellant and, in many cases, some excipients with a stabilizing function.
